Comparison of Broth Micro Dilution and Disk Diffusion Method for Susceptibility Testing of Dermatophytes

چکیده
Though fungi are widely distributed, many fungal infections go unrecognised as fungal diseases are not notifiable like some viral, parasitic and bacterial diseases. In recent years, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of fungal infections specially in those people whose immune system is compromised by aging, HIV infection, organ transplantation or cancer therapy (Kannan et al., 2006). This is more so in India due to hot and humid climate which favours fungal growth. Dermatophytes are responsible for the majority of the fungal infections involving skin, hair and nails. Concurrent with the increase in fungal infections combined with increased use of antifungal drugs often for prolonged periods has led to development of resistance to antifungal drugs. The availability of therapeutic options has led to the demand for in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing. However, unlike antibacterial susceptibility testing, antifungal susceptibility testing is still in its infancy (Jain et al., 2008; Koneman, 2006) inspite of the fact that a reference method for dermatophytes is available (CLSI-M 38A2, 2008). We have earlier reported a disk diffusion method for ISSN: 2319-7706 Volume 4 Number 5 (2015) pp. 24-33 http://www.ijcmas.com

Comparison of Disk Diffusion and E-Test with the Reference Method of Microbroth Dilution for Susceptibility Testing of Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates to Tetracyclines
Abstract Background and Objective: Due to the continuous increase of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains around the world, decision making for an effective treatment of infections caused by this organism depends on the results of antimicrobial susceptibility tests. In this study, the validity of disk diffusion and E-test methods was assessed b...
متن کاملComparison of disk diffusion method and broth microdilution method for antifungal susceptibility testing of dermatophytes.
The use of the agar diffusion Neo-Sensitabs method to determine antifungal susceptibility of 59 isolates of dermatophytes, namely Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, M. gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum and T. tonsurans to Clotrimazole (CLZ), Itraconazole (ITZ) and Terbinafine (TBF) is described. Results obtained are compared to the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)...
متن کاملComparison of Disc Diffusion, Broth Microdilution and Modified Hodge Test Susceptibility Testing Of Escherichia coli Isolates to Beta-Lactam Antibiotics
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: One of the main tasks of clinical microbiology laboratories is to determine antibiotic resistance profiles in common pathogens and ensure the selection of effective antibiotics for certain infections. The aim of this study was to compare the methods of disk diffusion, broth microdilution and modified Hodge test i...
متن کاملDevelopment of a rapid, reliable and quantitative method--"SPOTi" for testing antifungal efficacy.
A reference method for the antimicrobial susceptibility testing of common fungal pathogens such as dermatophytes, is currently lacking. In this study, we report the successful adaptation of solid agar-based spot culture growth inhibition assay (SPOTi) for dermatophytes, currently being used as a gold-standard in the anti-tubercular drug discovery field. The fungal-SPOTi assay correlated with th...
متن کاملComparison of five methods, including the PDM Epsilometer test (E test), for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 100 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to six antipseudomonal antibiotics were tested by five methods: the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) methods for broth microdilution, agar dilution, and agar disk diffusion; the Vitek Automicrobic System method (Vitek Systems, Hazelwood, Mo.); and the PDM Epsilometer test (E test) (...
